Instagram Insights: reach, engaged accounts and profile actions
Learn which Instagram Insights metrics matter for content decisions, business goals and campaign reporting.
Separate visibility from people
Views, accounts reached and content interactions are not interchangeable. Where Insights provides reach, use it to estimate unique exposure; treat views as content consumption and check how each metric is defined for the format. Do not assume a post's view count equals the number of unique people who saw it.
Connect formats to outcomes
For educational carousels, saves and shares can signal useful reference content; for demonstrations, watch time and profile visits can be more informative. These are signals, not automatic sales. Choose a primary metric for each format before publishing, then record relevant downstream clicks or qualified inquiries.
Look at follower and non-follower behavior
Where available, inspect whether distribution comes from existing followers or unfamiliar audiences. High new-audience exposure with no profile actions may mean the promise or next step is unclear. Strong follower engagement with limited reach can still be valuable for retention and customer support.
Build a reporting routine
Export or record weekly totals using consistent periods. Add notes about major launches, paid campaigns and content format changes. Compare a four-week trend, not one unusual day, and keep a separate row for traffic measured on your website using UTM parameters. A report should end with one practical decision.
