Accessible social media content: captions, contrast and alt text
Make social media posts easier to use through readable text, alt descriptions, accurate captions and understandable language.
Write text that survives a small screen
Use sufficient contrast, a legible font size and short blocks instead of text-dense images. Do not rely on color alone to distinguish chart series or status. Check the final design at the size people will actually see in a feed.
Use accurate captions for audio
Add subtitles that follow the spoken content, including meaningful sound cues when appropriate. Automatically generated captions need human review, especially for names and technical terms. Keep captions out of interface controls where the platform overlays buttons.
Describe useful visual information
When alt text is available, explain the information an image contributes rather than listing decorative objects. For a chart, provide the main trend and relevant quantities in the accompanying text. Do not duplicate the entire adjacent caption if it already explains the same thing.
Design interaction for different users
Avoid rapid flashing effects, ambiguous links and unexplained acronyms. Provide a direct description of the next action. Test content without sound and with image loading unavailable; if the essential message disappears, rewrite the surrounding text.
